11TH REGION BASEBALL: Sayre holds off Central in semifinals

5/28/2025

LEXINGTON — Madison Central’s late-game comeback came up just a little short — in stunning fashion — on Tuesday at Kentucky Proud Park.

Sam Coleman was called out at home plate on final play, allowing #4 Sayre (30-6) to hold on for a 6-5 win and advance to the 11th Region Tournament title game.

The #12 ranked Indians finish the season with a 25-12 record.

Sayre carried a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and Pierre Kauffman quickly got the first two outs.

Nick Pietromonaco got the rally started with a hit, Will Richardson was hit by a pitch and Sam Coleman singled to load the bases. Sophomore Kannon Cook then ripped a shot to the right field corner.

Pietromonaco and Richardson scored easily, but Coleman was called out after Sayre catcher Robbie Jenkins applied the tag at the plate.

Kauffman earned the complete-game victory, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and three walks with three strikeouts.

The Indians broke open a scoreless game in the third inning. Coleman drew a bases-loaded walk before an error allowed two runs to score.

Sayre didn’t have a hit against Central starter Logan Cob through the first four innings.

The Spartans, though, scored five times in the fifth. They had three hits and took advantage of two errors.

Sayre added another run in the top of the seventh — which turned out to be the game winner.

Cobb pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, four runs (one earned) and two walks, with seven strikeouts. Ben Murphy pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing three hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with one strikeout.
Pietromonaco was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored twice. Richardson was 1-for-3 and scored once. Coleman was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Beckett Parker-Noblitt was 1-for-3 and scored once. Luke Bryner was 1-for-3 and Braxton Hicks walked and scored once.
