The Madison Central baseball team will be very well represented this week during Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Games at the University of Kentucky.
Three Indians have been selected to play in the East-West Senior All-Star Game — Isaac Smith, Logan Smith and Alex Dapkus — while Cole Metcalfe was picked to play in the Junior East-West All-Star Game and catcher Jimmy Wright has been selected to participate in the Sophomore Showcase. Central coach Steve Roof and assistant coach Nick Barte will coach the East Senior All-Star Team. The All-Star festivities are set to get under way today in Lexington. The Junior All-Star games are scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m. The Junior Showcase is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Sophomore Showcase is set for 9 to 11:30 a.m. The Senior All-Star Games are scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, following the Unsigned Senior Showcase (noon to 2:30 p.m.).
Central (30-5) put together one of the best seasons in the school history this past year. The Indians won their first 19 games and spent the better part of a month ranked No. 1 in the KHSBCA Poll. Central rolled to the 44th District Tournament title, then fell to Lexington Catholic in the semifinals of the 11th Region Tournament earlier this month.
Isaac Smith, a center fielder who has signed to play with Bradley, had an .381 batting average with 12 doubles, six triples while scoring 42 runs and stealing a team-best 25 bases (in 27 attempts) this season. He was also hit by pitch a team-high 11 times.
Logan Smith had a .384 batting average, a .466 on-base percentage and had a team-high seven bunt hits while also finishing with a 6-2 record and a 1.85 ERA, four complete games and three shutouts.
Alex Dapkus had a .481 batting average, a .540 on-base percentage, a .759 slugging percentage, eight triples, 33 RBIs and 13 stolen bases (in 15 attempts). He also had a 3-1 record with a 1.34 ERA and two saves.
Metcalfe had a .336 batting average, a .434 on-base percentage, a .505 slugging percentage, 12 doubles, a team-best 35 RBIs and also had a 2-1 record with a 2.63 ERA.
Wright had a .303 batting average, a .426 on-base percentage, two home runs and was hit by a pitch nine times.
In addition to the three Central standouts, the East Senior All-Star team features: Jake Cain of Newport Central Catholic, Brad Popham of Dixie Heights, Vance Sullivan of Newport Central Catholic, Dylan Embs of Bishop Brossart, Shane Fowler of Harrison County, Jake Rebholz of Campbell County, Corey Bays of Henry Clay, Cameron Langfels of Dunbar, Troy Miller of Lexington Catholic, Logan Shatner of Lafayette, Jackson Deyer of West Jessamine, Matthew Hounchel of Mercer County, John Saylor of Rockcastle County, Tanner Sexton of Letcher County Central, Corey Slone of Hazard, Blake King of Knott County Central, Justin King of Knox Central, John Wilson of Clay County, Zach Jackson of Paintsville, Chandler Shepherd of Lawrence County, Joe Hunt of Fleming County and Austin Smith of Boyd County.
